PARK COUNTY PROFILE

Park County is located in the south-central part of Montana, fourth largest State in the Union. Montana has about 900,000 residents and Park County boasts approximately l2,500 hearty souls and an extremely large population of elk, deer, antelope, bald eagles, moose, mountain sheep, mountain goats, cougar and other wild critters.

We’re right next to YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK. In fact, to get to Cooke City and Silvergate, Montana, you have to drive THROUGH Yellowstone Park in the winter. We consider ourselves as having the best of all worlds; quaint hamlets, small farming communities, nice size county seat, large open spaces, lush valleys, craggy mountains and lots of free-flowing water. There’s superior hiking, horseback riding, fishing, photography, cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, float trips, camping, hunting, rodeos, cattle roundups, whitewater rafting, canoeing and just about any outdoor sport imaginable.

The ABSAROKA/BEARTOOTH WILDERNESS area and the GALLATIN NATIONAL FOREST here in Park County afford camping, picnicking, hiking, cross-country skiing, hunting and fishing; and the best part is IT’S ALL ACCESSIBLE.

Along with numerous schools, there is a hospital, clinic, medical doctors, dentists, chiropractors and eye doctors. We also have financial institutions, hotels, motels, shops, bed and breakfasts and restaurants. There are numerous and excellent art galleries and, surprisingly, a lot of these artists Live here in Park County.

CULTURE IN OUR AREA?

Livingston has two live theatres, two museums and Montana State University is just 26 miles from Livingston with all the culture you would expect from a university town.

What keeps our ECONOMY going? The large employers in our area are the Livingston Memorial Hospital, Livingston Rebuild Center, Montana Rail Link, and RY Timber. Independent industries include farming, ranching, tourism, dude ranching, outfitting, construction and the myriad number of businesses it takes to surround these industries. Montana and Park County are comprised of a high percentage of people who own their own small businesses, including ranchers and farmers. In Park County a multitude of people are independent and industrious souls.

Elevation and Weather! PERFECT! The elevation ranges 4500 feet to 7600 feel above sea level, so it is extremely varied.

Most winters we have good snow to ENJOY and lovely spring, summer and fall seasons. Fall colors in Park County are some of the most memorable in the country. Some years we get below zero weather in December or January. It’s a good time to curl up by the fireplace or wood stove with a good book. We do have FOUR SEASONS so you never get tired of the sameness in the weather. An old Montana saying is "if you don’t like the weather, stick around for a few hours and it will change."

WHAT MAKES THIS A SPECIAL AREA TO LIVE, WORK AND PLAY?

Our proximity to Yellowstone National Park with it’s fumaroles, geysers, mud pots, hot springs and wildlife makes it OURS TO ENJOY during the year, including the pristine winters. The Yellowstone River flows through our valley and Yellowstone Park. It’s not only a blue-ribbon trout stream but the longest free-flowing, undammed river in the lower 48 states. Park County boasts many spring creeks including the Nelson, Armstrong and Depuy, Six-Mile and the upper Shields. The Fly Fishing Federation has moved their headquarters here. We have wide open spaces that include ranches, farms, and National Forest Land. There are small towns, the largest being 7500 people and we have just about the most DYNAMITE SCENERY in the country ---PARADISE VALLEY!

HISTORY OF THE AREA!

Park County was created in May, l887. The railroad was the original reason for our inhabitants to make Park County their home. Of course, we’ve historically had farming and ranching. Mining was also an extremely
important part of the work force. In fact, Gardiner was originally settled as a mining town. It’s claim to current fame in as the north entrance to Yellowstone National Park.

It’s IMPORTANT TO KNOW that many of the families that settled Park County still have descendents that live in our area. If you’re looking for friendly and courteous people and a lifestyle away from the hustle and bustle, PARK COUNTY IS IT! Park County covers over 2500 square miles of the most outstanding geography you can imagine. We have mountains, meadows, valleys, plains, canyons, rivers, creeks, lakes, and everything in between.

GARDINER!!

Gardiner is a lovely western town perched between the banks of the Yellowstone River and the northern edge of Yellowstone National Park.

Gardiner boasts a huge rock arch dedicated by Teddy Roosevelt proclaiming it as the original entrance to YELLOWSTONE, the world’s FIRST NATIONAL PARK! Meander through the friendly shops and cafes of small town America or plan an afternoon jousting with the river on a huge rubber raft. Surrounded by wilderness, Gardiner’s outfitters can provide horseback riding with trips made to suit your desire and time frame. Pursuit of the wiley wapiti or elk is legion in this hunting paradise. However, the town itself is a natural haven for bison, elk, sheep and an occasional moose. For the ultimate VACATION DESTINATION or HOME, GARDINER HAS IT ALL!

HOW DO YOU GET THERE? The road from Gardiner to Cooke City and Silvergate is through Yellowstone Park, is open all Year, and it’s only 52 miles from Gardiner. During the summer you can take the Beartooth Highway from Red Lodge to Cooke City. Charles Kuralt deemed the BEARTOOTH the most scenic highway in the entire United States. TREAT YOURSELF and TRY IT!

COOKE CITY and SILVERGATE are two small mountain hamlets in the southern part of Park County. There are a couple hundred people who live there full time. During the summer they cater to tourists visiting Yellowstone. In the fall there are sightseers and hunters, and in the winter the mode of travel is snowmobiles and cross-country skis. There is a host of activities in this area including outstanding fishing, backpacking and horseback trips. REMEMBER! You are just a mile from YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK when you are in downtown Silvergate.

PARADISE VALLEY

The name says it all!. . . a lush, sprawling vista dotted with cattle and horses, divided by the YELLOWSTONE RIVER. On the east looms the lofty Absaroka/Beartooth Wilderness and the west the gracious Gallatin Range. Central to the vast valley is the pioneer town of EMIGRANT, today a bustling one-stop reprieve. Stock up for your drive at the well-supplied general store and gift shop, or have a refreshing lunch at the saloon. An outstanding natural hot springs, hotel and restaurant are not far. LIVINGSTON


Livingston is the largest community in Park County and is the county seat. Though Livingston’s past HISTORY is CHERISHED and PRESERVED, the city of about 7500 residents does not lack for modern conveniences. It’s large enough to support a wide variety of CULTURAL EVENTS as well as more than 400 businesses, retail stores and shops to meet most customer needs. For those preferring the solitude and quiet beauty of mountain lakes, there are literally hundreds to choose from within the immediate area. Livingston has fine public schools and a parochial school. There’s a golf course, a tennis court, swimming pool and of course, all the outdoor advantages, each in it’s proper season.

Livingston is only a half-hour from a major airport and the University. It’s a laid-back community with a grand total of three stop lights. In PARK COUNTY you won’t feel like you’re spending half your life waiting for the light to change. Livingston is a GREAT PLACE TO LIVE, WORK and PLAY !

CLYDE PARK AND WILSALL!


Both are wonderful little communities that are catering more and more to the visitor who is geared to the outdoors. Clyde Park has about 350 inhabitants and Wilsall has a little over l00. If you take the time, you can watch an expert saddle maker at work in Wilsall. There’s a neat antique store, hardware store, a few saloons, grocery and some great food served in the area. The view of the CRAZY Mountains, ABSAROKA/BEARTOOTH WILDERNESS and GALLATINS is outstanding. They have a great school district and are super places to raise your family. If you’re here in summer, plan on rodeo week-end. . . A WESTERN EXPERIENCE!
